Project overview
In response to the increasing need for flexible learning spaces, the City of Eckernförde commissioned the conversion of four 20ft shipping containers into a barrier-free classroom. The goal: a modular, fully reversible structure that meets modern educational and energy standards – without permanent alterations to the containers.

Key features & innovations

  • Structural reinforcement without compromise:
    The four containers were structurally reinforced to create an open-plan room without internal supports, allowing for a spacious and unobstructed interior layout.
  • Reversible screw-based construction:
    One of the standout innovations of the project was the use of a completely screw-fastened assembly, making the entire structure fully reversible. No welding was used – allowing for disassembly, relocation or repurposing at any time.
  • Energy efficiency built-in:
    The structure was fitted with GEG-compliant insulation, enabling efficient heating and meeting German energy performance requirements for temporary buildings.
  • Barrier-free access & natural light:
    The classroom features floor-to-ceiling windows and a glass entrance door, making the space bright and welcoming. At the same time, the original container doors remain operable and act as protective, lockable shutters for added security.
  • Fully integrated electrical system:
    The container units were equipped with internal electrical installations and lighting, ensuring a plug-and-play solution ready for immediate educational use.

Result

The project successfully delivered a functional, safe and energy-efficient classroom from standard shipping containers – fully accessible, flexible in use, and demountable without residue. A true milestone in sustainable container-based construction for public infrastructure.
