Australian shipping container sizes are generally based on the international twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU). At 6.06m long, a standard 20ft shipping container is one TEU, while a standard 40ft container is two TEUs. 8ft, 10ft and 48ft lengths are also available, as well as high cube (taller) and pallet wide (wider) options.

Yes, storage containers can be used as secure, portable and perfectly affordable garages. At 6.06m long and 2.44m wide, a 20ft container can fit most passenger vehicles, while a 40ft container can fit two. Buying a container can be far more cost-effective than building a dedicated garage, and if you ever need to move it, you can. Weatherproof and fully secure containers are also ideal for long-term vehicle storage.

Whether you need a concrete slab for your storage container will depend on the ground you plan to place it on. A standard 20ft storage container weighs approximately 2200kg (and far more when full), with the weight spread across a relatively compact 14.8m² footprint. A hard substrate like granite will generally be able to handle the load, but softer soil may require a concrete slab, and marshy soil will always need support from concrete pilings.

High cube containers are the same length and width as general purpose 20ft storage containers, but they are approximately 30cm taller, making them 2.89m high. High cube containers therefore offer more internal volume, and are great for storing bulkier goods.
