Flat rack containers are designed to transport oversized or awkwardly shaped goods that won’t fit inside a standard shipping container. They lack the walls and roof of a traditional enclosed container, but feature a reinforced base and optional end walls can be fixed, collapsible or removable.

While both types of container lack a roof, the difference between flat rack and open top containers is that flat rack containers also lack side walls. Open top containers are generally used for tall cargo that still requires side protection during transport, while flat rack containers are used for cargo that won’t fit within the walls of a standard container.

Flat rack containers offer minimal protection to the cargo they carry, which is why they’re only really used for oversize goods (at least in terms of transportation). Collapsible flat rack containers can demand more maintenance than traditional containers due to their moving parts, and assembling and disassembling these containers can take time, potentially slowing down your operations. That said, flat rack containers are uniquely suited to a range of specialist applications.
