A standard 8ft shipping container has a tare (empty) weight of 900kg, and has a maximum payload of around 2600kg, so can weigh as much as 3500kg when fully loaded.

As the name suggests, 10ft containers are slightly larger than 8ft containers – not just in length, but in height and width too, resulting in 50% more internal volume (10m³ vs 15m³). 10ft containers have the same height and width as standard 20ft and 40ft containers, which means they can be stacked and transported with those other sizes. A major benefit of 8ft containers, meanwhile, is that they can generally be handled with a heavy duty forklift, and often come with built in forklift pockets for that purpose.
